Houston Urges Vigilance Amid Post-Hurricane Challenges
City of Houston officials issued a stark warning to residents on Monday as Hurricane Beryl's aftermath continued to wreak havoc across the city. Despite the calming weather conditions, Mayor John Whitmire emphasized the ongoing dangers lurking in the aftermath of the storm.
"We must remain vigilant," Mayor Whitmire cautioned during a press briefing under the clearing skies. "The threat of flooded roads, fallen tree limbs, and downed power lines still looms large."
The impact of Hurricane Beryl has left a staggering 2.2 million residents without power, according to city officials. Brad Tutunjian of CounterPoint Energy stated that while efforts to restore power are underway with the aid of 10,000 linemen from outside the region, a comprehensive assessment of damages is crucial before restoration timelines can be estimated.
With widespread power outages posing additional risks, Houston Fire Department's Justin Wells highlighted concerns about heat-related illnesses and carbon monoxide poisoning. "Check on your neighbors," Wells urged, emphasizing the importance of community support during this challenging time.
In response to the power crisis, the city plans to open shelters once an evaluation of multiservice centers and other facilities is completed. However, Whitmire refrained from providing a specific timeline for their opening.
Road safety remains a critical concern as hundreds of street lights are non-functional, posing a significant risk of traffic accidents amid lingering floodwaters. Houston Public Works' Randy Macchi stressed the extensive time needed to fully assess and repair the storm's aftermath.
Seeking federal assistance, Mayor Whitmire disclosed his request for a federal disaster declaration, supported by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz and U.S. Representative Al Green at the press conference. Acting Gov. Dan Patrick is expected to formalize the request soon, setting the stage for potential federal aid pending President Joe Biden's decision.
